On second try, Johnson Street development gets nod

The Madison City Council approved a zoning change that will allow developer Chris Houden to build a mixed-use development in the 700 block of East Johnson Street. In June, the Council fell one vote short of approving the change, but its second attempt a month later was successful. The Council voted 13–6 for the change, according to a Wisconsin State Journal article.

Houden will renovate five older homes, relocate two, and demolish two more in a plan to bring 54 apartments and ground-floor retail to the heavily traveled and historic thoroughfare.

The Tenney-Lapham Neighborhood Association opposed the development.
