‘Stupid’ Get Fit contestant grabs some dumbbells

Ten professionals and 10 teams are competing in the 2014 Get Fit Challenge, a spinoff of IB’s popular Fittest Executive Challenge. Who will earn the healthiest marks? Because I’m stupid. That’s why I’m taking part in the In Business Get Fit Challenge. Not really, but in the past few weeks I have had that thought go through my mind more than a few times. Exercising regularly and eating healthy can be hard. That being said, I am starting to enjoy the challenge.

I signed up this year because I realized I needed a kick in the pants to get healthier. Specifically, I need to lose 15 to 20 pounds and get into an exercise routine that I can stick with. With a family that is always on the go and a growing business, it has become too easy to grab a meal on the run and skip exercising.

So why am I doing the Get Fit Challenge? Maybe it’s not that I’m stupid. I have three main priorities in my life that I try to focus on and put my time and energy into: my faith, my family, and my company. If I were in better shape, all three of those areas would likely improve, because I’d be more focused, energetic, and healthy.

I have been making a conscious effort to eat healthier. This has actually been pretty easy. I have cut out a lot of sugar from my diet. I thought that would be hard to do. When I learned I was selected for this challenge, I prepared for it by eating a large ice cream dessert almost every day for two weeks, sometimes two in one day. I figured if I gained a bunch of weight before the challenge it would be easy to lose that weight. Unfortunately, I only gained 1 or 2 pounds while preparing for my initial weigh-in. My wife thought that was very unfair.

At home, we have started having more fruits and veggies prepared so it’s easy to grab a quick, healthy snack. I’ve stopped having a second dinner or big dessert at about 9 p.m. I’ve reduced my portion size. That has been the hardest part, as I’m a pretty fast eater, so I would always keep eating more and more until others were done.

I am just getting into more of an exercise routine. For the past few years, I haven’t done a lot of exercising. I have played basketball pretty regularly, but not much else. In Business recently paired me with Chris Schvetz, a personal trainer at Premier Fitness Development. I have gone to three group CrossFit training classes. CrossFit is hard work and I feel like a fish out of water, as I’m tall and not very coordinated. At Premier I’ve been kindly compared to Manute Bol. For those who don’t remember Manute Bol, he was an NBA center. He is remembered mostly for being without speed, coordination, and endurance. I am enjoying it, though. The class is full of other people just like me. They want to get in better shape and start making some healthier life choices. I never thought that I would ever do any weight lifting, but I’m actually enjoying it.
