Urge to run propels Get Fit team
Ten professionals and 10 teams are competing in the 2015 Get Fit Challenge. Who will earn the healthiest marks? This week, IB checks in with the team from Community Partnerships Inc., which includes team members Scott Strong, Mercy Greenwald, Carrie Tourek, and Lori Duzan. Greetings from Team CP! These first few months have found us in a flurry of activity, both in our professional work and in our personal fitness goals! It’s hard to believe we’re already in the throes of summer, and midway through the IB Get Fit Challenge! We’ve all been working hard, individually and collectively, to make fitness and self-care a bigger part of our daily lives. As a team we do weekly check-ins to talk about goals, successes, and challenges from the previous week, and to see how everyone is doing. Earlier this spring, Team CP engaged the rest of the organization in getting a team together for a charity 5K held by a fellow non-profit. Our team of seven (plus an adorable dog!) raised over $200 for Chrysalis Inc., an agency dedicated to helping folks with mental health challenges find meaningful and supportive work, and had a lovely time being active for a good cause. Scott and Mercy represented Team CP and both felt good about their respective times!
All members of Team CP are working toward larger fitness goals, many around either beginning to run (Lori), getting back into running after a hiatus (Scott and Mercy), or going for more distance and speed (Carrie). Mercy joined the Fleet Feet preparation group for the Madison Mini Marathon in August, and was really enjoying it! Unfortunately, she had an injury at her gym earlier in June, and has been out of commission for a few weeks. She’s hopeful to get back to running and back on track for either the Madison Mini or the Madison Marathon in the fall! Lori has started a Couch to 5K program and is enjoying it, and Carrie and reports running longer distances and feeling great! Scott also had a minor run-related injury, which put running on hold for a while, but he continues to do general circuit training four to five times per week with more running in the near future.
All of us are also working harder on making conscious eating decisions, whether it be through food tracking apps or eating more mindfully. We also try to provide more healthful items for meetings and lunches when together, and be more conscious in general of the food we eat and amount of water we drink — you’ll usually see us lugging around water bottles wherever we go!
Challenges come and go, as well as successes. Being able to talk out our frustrations or roadblocks (especially around eating!) really helps, and knowing that even though we’re doing the majority of our work on our own we’re still a team also increases the motivation we feel to stay on track. We’re excited to see where the summer takes us, and how much more we can do with the time we have left!
