This week, IB checks in with Bob Nennig, attorney at Nennig Law Offices LLC, who is competing in the individual challenge.
Staying motivated on this journey to better fitness and wellbeing has not been a smooth path for me. It is filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. When I look at my family I am instantly motivated, as I want to do everything I can to be there for them, both now and in the future. I know that taking care of myself is the first and most important step in ensuring that I will be there for them when they need me. However, life sometimes gets in the way.
For me, I find the first half of the day to be the easiest part. I wake up full of determination and focus. That enthusiasm, along with a very supportive work environment, allows me to get through the first half of the day without a lot of effort or struggle.
However, the toughest challenge for me is the evenings. Outside influences have a larger effect on my successes and failures than I would like to admit. If it has been a stressful day, for whatever reason, I find it much easier to give into temptation, to have that beer or dish of ice cream as a way to make things better.
I am slowly transitioning into more positive ways to deal with these outside influences. For instance, while I don’t necessarily enjoy exercising, I am finding that it helps relieve the stress of normal day-to-day life. Walking with my wife at night also is a great way for us to talk. Walking not only helps me physically by relieving tension, I am finding it gives me greater clarity of thought, allowing me to better put things into perspective and focus. It is these (hopefully) lifelong changes and the encouragement I receive from family and friends that I am finding the most rewarding.
