Market and economic update: U.S. consumer provides backbone of economic growth

Last week’s U.S. economic data put a softer spin on current activity than the strong employment report did to start the month. Retail sales slipped 0.8% in January and confidence indicators eased from their high levels. The National Federation of Independent Business Small Business Optimism Survey slipped to 97.9, and the preliminary University of Michigan Sentiment Index for February slipped 4.5 points to 93.6.

Last week was headlined by a robust U.S. employment report, with January nonfarm payrolls growing by 257,000 jobs. Including the 147,000 jobs added to the months of November and December, nonfarm payrolls added the most jobs over the past year (3.2 million) since May 2000.

Market and economic update: U.S. economic data softened in fourth quarter

U.S. economic data has softened from the robust activity levels in the second and third quarters of 2014. Gross domestic product grew just 2.6% in the fourth quarter. Consumer spending and investment activity remained solid, but government spending slowed after providing strong contributions in the middle of 2014.
