Trump didn't beat Hillary — flawed assumptions, political arrogance did

Shame on Hillary Clinton’s “honor guard,” the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, for blaming Clinton’s loss to Donald Trump in Wisconsin on a lower-than-expected turnout of African-American voters in Milwaukee County and southeastern Wisconsin.

Such an excuse is not only unfair and politically lame, but is blatantly racist at its core — especially when nearly 35% of eligible white voters and over 20% of millennials in Wisconsin didn’t turn out to vote at all.

The two elephants in the room that no one wants to publicly talk about are Clinton’s silk-stocking white liberal honor guard and the leftover Gov. Jim Doyle political operatives who still control Democrat politics in Wisconsin.

Together, they lost Wisconsin to Donald Trump because of their flawed political assumptions and conventional political tactics during an unconventional presidential election year. Combined with Hillary’s inability to overcome her self-inflicted image among millions of voters who saw her as untrustworthy and part of the politically elite establishment in Washington, this was a slow political train wreck, just waiting to happen in Wisconsin, and elsewhere like Michigan.

Ignoring the countless warnings by grassroots Bernie Sanders field workers and the Sanders campaign team — who overwhelmingly defeated the Hillary machine and the Doyle political operatives in Wisconsin with 56.6% of the vote for Sanders to Hillary’s dismal 43.1% — the Hillary team continued to use the same old conventional political tactics during an anti-political establishment uprising against Washington insiders.

Worse yet, the Clinton strategy in Wisconsin and nationally was simply to attack Trump, while dodging and weaving around Hillary’s position on trade, fracking, and the $1.2 million Hillary received from the Goldman Sachs mafia for her three speeches, while refusing to turn over the transcripts of those speeches to the media.

Then came the coup de grâce political failure, due to the DPW’s own political malfeasance, of not “demanding” that Hillary campaign in western and northern Wisconsin, and eastern Minnesota, in order to reach millions of Wisconsin voters in places like La Crosse, Eau Claire, Superior, Ashland, Wausau, Stevens Point, Wisconsin Rapids, and Black River Falls.

Instead, Hillary, Bill, and the DPW believed they could automatically win against an outspokenly racist, homophobic, and misogynistic candidate for president, while fantasizing about sweeping enough U.S. Senate and maybe enough House seats to control Congress, and to have the Democrats take back the state Senate.

Nino and I have had these "conversations" on Facebook. I agree with him that mistakes were made by the Clinton campaign. But the Racism and misogyny of this election is what really won. Coupled with the false equivalency the mainstream media gave us all campaign of all of Trumps atrocities being equal to Hillary Clinton's one major faux pas of the email server. Absurd. 1) Voter ID probably was the cause of losing by the margin she lost by given what I saw in rural white Dane. 2) otherwise you are right - no discussion of how to fix the affordable care act- no discussion of how a trade war with China might affect ag incomes and probably no expenditure in rural Wisconsin by the Dems for anything other than the ads aimed at urban liberal voters . when I lived in rural Dane (much less the rest of the state) we couldn't get signs made our own - couldn't get literature made our own and kept our own voter lists - we won but in spite of the Democratic party not with its help. Election day morning the email from the rural grassroots network (progressive but independent of both parties)was a reminder to pick up any signs as we may need them next time . We need less Democratic and progressive ditto-heads and more politically active people willing to talk and listen to their neighbors. Everyday people will never win playing by the rules of the billionaires.

Sounds like an absolutely clear defense/reasoning to keep the Electoral College in place. Hilary's refusal to visit Wisconsin is what the future holds if the "Get Rid of the Electoral College" fools living/voting anywhere but on the East Coast, Left Coast and Illinois and a few battleground states want candidates to visit, listen to them, HEAR them, and to represent them. Kiss goodbye any regular candidate visits to Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and perhaps 30 or more other states.

What you WILL get is candidates frequently visiting only the largest population states, even those candidates that previously have decided to not visit them because they are perceived to be no-win states. Had Trump been forced to campaign in California, New York and other large population states, no telling how the popular vote would have turned out - don't default back to assuming those states are owned by Democrats.

By Mr. Amato's reasoning, Wisconsin is a a good test case laboratory for what happens when a candidate does not visit - the other candidate likely will do very well, if only because uninformed voters (which I suggest we have a few too many of) will vote for whoever they see the most of - why would this reasoning not also apply to places like California which in essence was heavily ignored by Trump's campaign? Lots of visits by him might have vastly changed the popular vote. Ever talk to people in California that don't live in the LA area or San Francisco? Think they might also feel they are being ignored and see huge, HUGE amounts of their tax money going to only the urban areas, especially the LA area cesspool??

Lamenting over Hilary not visiting Wisconsin due to her campaign staff deciding it wasn't necessary? The future will be future candidates not even having any campaign staff here.

Comments about voter ID having anything to do with Hilary's loss? LOL. Another default assumption that will lead to more DNC losses.

Interesting analysis...and quite different from the main stream media following the election. From them I heard mostly....it was James Comey, Russian hacking, rigged primaries, and fake news. Those same media outlets, in the preceding months, had engaged significant effort covering the "racist, homophobic, and misogynistic candidate"......apparently to no avail, because 'deplorable' Americans chose otherwise.

I voted for Hillary, who was an alternative to Trump. Unfortunately, many people choose Trump as an alternative to Hillary. Why? Beside what I discussed in my OpEd article above, there were many more reasons why people voted against Hillary: (1) Bill Clinton's one sided NAFTA Trade Agreement, which destroyed millions of American Middle Class Family Manufacturing Jobs; (2) for Hillary's original support for the TARP Trade Agreement as Secretary of State, which would have killed more American Jobs; (3) for Hillary's support to bailout the Wall Street Investment Banks who caused the 2008 Stock Market Crash & the Great Recession; (4) for a rigged economy by Washington Political Insiders, like the Clinton's; (5) for a corrupt and rigged political Democrat Party primary in which Hillary's "Take No Prisoners Honored Guard" chairperson Debra Wasserman Schultz - for stealing the Democrat Presidential Nomination away from U.S. Senator Bernie Sander's in NY, AZ, CA; (6) for Hillary's Failure for not articulating a clear vision and political message as an alternative to Trump and only telling voters NOT to vote for Trump because he was a sexists, racist, homophobic and was unfit to be president; (7) for Hillary's poor judgement for voting for the Iraq War, which was built on lies; and (8) for having a private Server, that caused the email controversy; (9) in addition to many Americans, who wanted someone to drain the swamp of lobbyist and the political corruption in our Nations Capital; and (10) for being overly confident and entitled to being the next president of the United States. All of which, were self-inflected political wounds by the Clinton's and the Debra Wasserman Schuetz Honor Guard. And now, a majority of Americans who voted against Trumpism - will be suffering the Political, Social and Economic Consequences, of Donald Trump's money driven deal making Presidential Administration. - A. J. Nino Amato
