Billionaire coach

No, this isn’t a story about highly paid coaches or Bret Bielema. It’s about a guy named Joe Moglia, who was hired this past year to coach Coastal Carolina’s football team. In his first year, he led the team to a share of the Big South Conference title. What is interesting about this is that in the last few years, he only had one paid coaching job. He’s been in the business world since 1984, and from 2001-8 was the CEO of TD Ameritrade and led the company as its market cap increased from $700 million to $9 billion.

To meet or not to meet, that is the question

I have a friend who moved to the Pacific Northwest after college and worked at Reebok and Adidas, which are obviously large companies. Recently he went out on his own to be a consultant. We talked about why he made the change, how it was going, and so on, and he really seemed to like his new gig. When I asked what he missed least about his old job, he quickly replied, "The meetings!"

Thanks, I needed that

On Monday, I received a reminder email from our head of marketing that it was a blog week and I had one due on Friday. Some weeks I have an idea ready to go, but this week I emailed back, “I've got nothin’,” and began to get stressed about it. I don’t get paid for doing my blog, so why do I do it when it’s just one more thing to jam into my busy life?! This happens about every third blog when I seem to be lacking ideas and it becomes very stressful.

Someone to chase

Last Saturday I headed out for my bike ride, unmotivated and a little bit sore after testing for the In Business Fittest Executive competition the previous day. I wasn't up for the challenge of my normal hilly ride, so I intentionally started on a flatter route. As I headed out of town on Seminole Highway, a young woman about my daughter's age passed me, and friendly as can be said, “Have a nice ride!”

What's the point?

Oftentimes I have my wife proof the final version of my blog. On my last blog, when she was done, she said, “It’s okay ... but what’s the point? What are you trying to get across by writing your blogs?” Ouch! As I paused and thought about it, I acknowledged that I wasn’t intending to convey anything particularly brilliant or necessarily brand new, but rather was trying to share business information that might not be top of mind for some people.
