At least I'm better than I used to be

Last weekend I was out riding my new bike for the first time (if you see me, I can show you a picture of it since it's now the wallpaper on my phone!). I hadn't found time to get my bike computer switched over yet, and that was a problem for me as it left me in the dark about whether I was any faster on the new bike. Each time I ride, I try to beat my previous ride's average speed – that's my gauge on whether I'm getting faster, slower, or staying the same. That got me thinking about the topic of measuring success and how something similar applies in the business world.

Crisis – danger or opportunity?

I went on a couple of bike rides last weekend. On Saturday it was 50 degrees, damp and cold, and I saw some snow along the road. I had to stop and put my hat on under my helmet – but that may have something to do with being follically challenged.

Are we there yet?

I hate to travel, but I like to go places. The problem is you can't walk or even drive to places like Costa Rica or Florence, and if you have a three-day business trip in Phoenix, you're going to fly. When you fly (or at least when I fly) things often go awry.

Shoot! We didn't think about that

If you're not failing, you're not trying. That might be a little strong, but if you or your company are not coming up with new ideas and trying new things that sometimes fail, you're probably not moving fast enough to win in today's business world. You have to change to improve.

Single-tasking

I was recently at a yoga class (yes, I do yoga – it's the best thing I've ever done for my chronically bad back and I highly recommend it) and the instructor told us to practice "single- tasking" to focus both mind and body on the one thing that we were doing at that moment. That really caught my attention as I'm a big multi-tasker (I check e-mail while watching the Packer game, I try to learn Spanish while driving, I listen to books on my iPod while walking the dog). In fact, I liked the concept of single-tasking so much, as it's so different from how we live today, that I thought it could be an interesting blog topic.
