Mind Your Business

with Corey Chambas

Are we there yet?

I hate to travel, but I like to go places. The problem is you can't walk or even drive to places like Costa Rica or Florence, and if you have a three-day business trip in Phoenix, you're going to fly. When you fly (or at least when I fly) things often go awry.

Shoot! We didn't think about that

If you're not failing, you're not trying. That might be a little strong, but if you or your company are not coming up with new ideas and trying new things that sometimes fail, you're probably not moving fast enough to win in today's business world. You have to change to improve.

I was recently at a yoga class (yes, I do yoga – it's the best thing I've ever done for my chronically bad back and I highly recommend it) and the instructor told us to practice "single- tasking" to focus both mind and body on the one thing that we were doing at that moment. That really caught my attention as I'm a big multi-tasker (I check e-mail while watching the Packer game, I try to learn Spanish while driving, I listen to books on my iPod while walking the dog). In fact, I liked the concept of single-tasking so much, as it's so different from how we live today, that I thought it could be an interesting blog topic.

One hit wonder

I was asked to do this "Mind" Your Business blog series a while back. I was told it would be a good thing to do and not to worry, "it would be easy." I've received some positive feedback on my posts, so I think it has turned out to be a good thing. However, I can tell you it is NOT as easy as advertised. Consistently coming up with thought-provoking content is a challenge. As I started the series I had a couple of ideas so I started strong, but I was worried about continuing to come up with meaningful subject matter every two weeks.

Get out of town!

I just got back from our annual sales summit. This is one of two annual company meetings we hold offsite (the other being our strategic planning sessions). This is the second year in a row we faced a snowstorm the day of our event and had to endure a white knuckle drive to get to our out-of-town meeting. Add to that being out of the office and getting a day and a half behind on work, plus a night away from our families, and you could ask "is it worth the hassle of going offsite?"
