This Just In: Tommy Thompson Can’t Swim

The Tommy Thompson for Senate campaign is in receipt of the latest memo from political consultant John Nichols, now moonlighting at The Capital Times, The Nation magazine, the Mr. Ed comedy-variety hour on MSNBC, and as guest prestidigitator on the radio Slymer.

Time to bang the drums and blow the vuvuzelas – at tonight’s Dane County Board meeting

Time to bang the drums and blow the vuvuzelas – at tonight’s Dane County Board meeting

I am not easily outraged. I’ve been around politics all my life. Grew up in a political family, reported on politics for daily newspapers, ran for office and served in local government myself, worked for and with Gov. Thompson, and campaigned for many other candidates, sometimes as a paid consultant. I am outraged today.

Death of a hardware store is requiem for a neighborhood

Death of a hardware store is requiem for a neighborhood

It is for good reason that The Wisconsin State Journal played the closing of a single hardware store as Page One news Tuesday. The Meadowood Ace hardware store is closing shop after 25 years on Raymond Road on Madison’s southwest side. As go signs of urban decay, this wasn’t the canary in the coal mine keeling over, this was the miner himself.

Permit? PERMIT?! We don’t need no stinkin’ permit!

Permit? PERMIT?! We don’t need no stinkin’ permit!

We’re progressives! Our superior intellect and morality allow us to play by our own rules! Our constitutional right to speech trumps yours. Happy Constitution Day! Miles Kristan, also known as “Pink Dress Guy,” pourer of beer over State Rep. Robin Vos and all-around bad actor, comments on my YouTube posting of last summer’s historic and unique Conservative Sing-Along in the State Capitol. Historic and unique because, unlike the leftward Solidarity Singers, we actually applied for and received a permit. (Who is that off-key voice? ... Oh, never mind.)

Your convention boos God and you lecture us about ‘Wisconsin values’?

Republicans just aren’t that much into identity politics, while Democrats see everyone as some sort of hyphenate. This explains their fragmentized pitch to women, the poor, racial minorities, sexual preference/predilection. The Dem convo in Charlotte even featured an illegal alien. All are some sort of victim, apparently.

Will Chicago teachers strike seep into the streets of Madison?

Will Chicago teachers strike seep into the streets of Madison?

More evidence that teachers unions will fight to the bitter end: Chicago teachers could go on strike next week. Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, the former top aide to Mr. Hope and Change himself, is a “bully,” according to the teachers union. Who knew? Chicago’s public schools had some of the shortest school days in the nation, five hours and 45 minutes for elementary schools, until the school day was extended to seven hours this school year. “The move added more instructional time for subjects like reading, art, math and science, according to district officials.”

I ♥ Mitt Romney

I ♥ Mitt Romney

I always learn something from the listeners who call in to the Divine Miss Vicki’s radio show airing in Madison, La Crosse, Eau Claire, and points north. Friday, with guest host Brian Schimming, the phone lines were jammed with enthusiasm for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Political conventions may preach to the choir but, as the son of a preacher man, Scott Walker likes to say: you preach to the choir so they will sing.
