Say goodbye to the Radio Sly-mer

Say goodbye to the Radio Sly-mer

I am no fan of radio hosts who get mean and personal. So I shed no tears for the Radio Sly-mer, who was this afternoon fired from WTDY-AM 1670 after 15 years.

There’s new management at Midwest Family Radio; the Sly-mer’s longtime protector, Tom Walker, retired a few months ago. Reportedly, the station is going all sports with the CBS sports package, which includes talker Jim Rome.

I call him the Sly-mer because he was a name-caller and seemed to have an unhealthy obsession with rival radio talker Vicki McKenna, to the point of giving out her home address and picketing her speaking engagements.

I call him the Sly-mer because he did things like call then-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice an Aunt Jemima. He suggested that Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor performed sexual favors to win election, rejoiced at her diagnosis of cancer, and made fun of her children. These are just a few examples, all reported in the mainstream news media.

The man’s program ran weekday mornings from 6 to 10. He billed himself as the tribune of progressivism, and posed as more labor union than Samuel Gompers. Regular on-air guests included One Scot Ross, Comrade John Nichols, star-crossed AFSCME leader Marty Beil, Democratic Party spokesmouth Graeme Zielinski, and the Crying Man from the Siege of the Capitol.

The station’s website this afternoon carried only an anodyne holiday greeting. The Sly-mer’s Facebook page carried this message:

I just want to inform you that today was my last day of employment at WTDY. After 15 years, I was told that my services were no longer needed. I would like to thank everybody that’s supported my program. It’s been a pleasure to share this wonderful experience with you. I need to take a big deep breath this weekend and figure out what my future plans are. But, old Winter Soldiers NEVER DIE, and I look forward to letting you know what lies ahead. Solidarity!

This being Thanksgiving, I do extend sympathy to anyone facing unemployment, even you-know-who. He could be an intelligent conversationalist and, even entertaining. But too often so sophomoric that he hurt his own cause.

I had the acute misfortune of seeing Sylvester a few times over the last 6 months.
A glance his way is a quick education in what a jiggling tub of lard is. It is hard to believe there is actually a skeletel system supporting him.

You buried the lede. Actually, you sat on it for a day and then tapped it into your comments section: The news staff was also canned. One less news outlet in Madison. One less staff of reporters to cast light on the operations of our government. And if you care to argue that you and your fellow bloggers are fulfilling that important job, I would spit whatever I happened to be drinking at the time all over my laptop. Bloggers in this town are apologists for whichever party they happen to endorse.

Must disagree, UWBiz. The story is Sly. He took the whole brand down with him. All of these characters in one way or another fed off, joked with, laughed at the Sly-mer's misdeeds. Not one said, on air, at least, Sly, you need to retract that now. But the Sly-mer was the straw that stirred the drink at TDY. But yes, my druthers would be that the station start afresh with a talk show host who didn't trade in fart jokes and woman-hating and build a small news team around him/her. My guess is that the station's finances are so degraded and its reputation in such disrepute that it cannot afford the risk of such an investment in the Great Unknown. CBS Sports, on the other hand, is a known commodity.

I often call Vicki's show, and often get on the air. One time I had heard the Sly-mer that morning, and started telling Vicki one of the stupid things he had said, and voila - I was booted off the air. I was confused. I called back and said, hey, I know you can boot anyone, but why did you cut me off when I said Sly - I was gonna say what a jerk he was, etc. The screener said, hey, that's ok, it's just standard policy to cut anyone off who says Sly-mers name. He said it's like Harry Potter, Sly-mer is "like Voldermort", you know, He-who-shall-not-be-named". Some may say this is closed minded to opposing views, but after thinking about it I was glad they cut me off for saying the Sly-mer's name. He is a piece of trash - does anyone remember his "vile comments about the death of Bart Starr's son (cocaine overdose) and trying to draw a parallel to Bart's parenting skills and his son's drug problems." Sly took shock to shlock and worse. Good riddance to bad rubbish as my grandma would say.
